| Re Boris III e suo figlio, il principe ereditario Simeone. |
Nato il 16 giugno 1937, il principe Simeone di Bulgaria (in seguito re) era il secondo figlio e unico maschio di re Boris III di Bulgaria e della regina Giovanna (nata principessa di Savoia). Simeone si unì a una sorella maggiore, la principessa Maria Luisa (nata nel 1933). Nelle sue memorie, la regina Giovanna ricordò: " La primavera del 1937 fu insolitamente mite. La nascita di mio figlio sembrò aggiungere qualcosa al bel tempo. Ci fu una tregua nella situazione interna bulgara instabile e complessa, come una specie di tregua divina. Tutti i bulgari, persino i nemici, furono felici per un po', aperti a qualche speranza sconosciuta, all'anticipazione di qualcosa di nuovo, privo di contorni chiari, ma non per questo meno reale. La nascita di Simeone arrivò a spezzare la catena di momenti drammatici interni ". La nascita di Simeone fu annunciata alla popolazione di Sofia da un saluto di 101 colpi di cannone sparati nel cielo della capitale bulgara alle 6:40 del mattino del giorno della sua nascita. Il parco del palazzo reale si riempì rapidamente di gente. La regina Giovanna scrisse: “ Nel frattempo, la voce del popolo aveva dato un nome a mio figlio. Le strade si riempirono di grida di 'Simeone! Simeone!' prima ancora che il palazzo facesse un annuncio ufficiale ". La regina notò che inizialmente aveva pianificato di chiamare suo figlio Borislav, ma che le acclamazioni dei bulgari che celebravano il suo arrivo avevano stabilito il suo nome.
Il sindaco di Sofia, Ivan Ivanov, scrisse al re Boris congratulandosi con la famiglia reale per questa felice occasione:
“Vostra Maestà,L'odierna luminosa giornata di giugno ha portato la più grande gioia al popolo bulgaro! Ovunque, nelle città e nei villaggi, dove batte un cuore bulgaro e si sente parlare in bulgaro, gioia e rapimento ci riempiono tutti. Dio non ha abbandonato la Bulgaria dopotutto, la ama. Il regno bulgaro oggi ha il suo erede apparente! Lo stato bulgaro, oltre al suo capo di stato, ora ha anche il suo successore! La nazione bulgara va avanti con nuove speranze e ideali, ricordando i tempi gloriosi di Boris I e Simeone il Grande. Lunga vita alla Bulgaria! Lunga vita al re Boris III! Lunga vita alla regina Giovanna! Lunga vita al successore bulgaro al trono Simeone, principe ereditario di Turnovo!"
The following official Act was drawn up by the government in accordance with the arrival of the heir to the King:
“This 16th Day of June in the year one thousand nine hundred and thirty seven, Wednesday, the undersigned Georgi Ivanov Kyoseivanov, Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Denominations and the official on the civil status of the members of the Royal Family, with the assistance of Alexander Petrov Ognyanov, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the State Seal of the Kingdom, by virtue of Article 138 of the Persons Act, in the presence of the witnesses Konstatin Georgiev Panov, head of the office of His Majesty the King, and Doctor Vladimir Penev Matev, administrator of the Princess Clementine hospital, drew up the present act concerning the following: at the Sofia Palace this morning at five o’clock, Her Majesty Queen Giovanna was examined by the private medical advisor Prof. Dr. Walter Stöckel, Director of the University Clinic of Obstetrics in Berlin, Doctor Dimiter Stamatov, Regular Professor, Director of the University Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Sofia, and Prof. Dr. Günther Schulze, Chief Physician at the University Clinic in Berlin, who established that the time had come for Her Majesty the Queen to give birth.For the purpose of greater hygienic safety, the professors Stöckel and Stamatov insisted that the expectant mother be taken to the Princess Clementine hospital where, accompanied by His Majesty the King and the above-mentioned persons, she arrived at five hours and thirty minutes.At five hours and forty-five minutes we were told of the impending delivery of Her Majesty the Queen, immediately after which we proceeded to the above-mentioned hospital which we reached at six o’clock. There we were accommodated in the antechamber of the operating room in which Her Majesty the Queen was and remained waiting for the moment of the birth.At six hours and forty minutes we were invited into the room where, besides Her Majesty the Queen, we also found His Majesty the King and the above-mentioned persons. As soon as we entered, Professor Stöckel showed us a living infant of the male sex, which he had just delivered and which was still tied with the umbilical cord (Funiculus umbillicalis) to the body of the royal mother. The cord was cut in our presence. The birth was normal, without any complications.The newborn infant, which is the second child of His Majesty Boris III, King of Bulgarians, and of Her Majesty Giovanna, Queen of Bulgaria, Princess of Savoy, was given the name Simeon and the title Crown Prince of Turnovo.At eight hours and thirty minutes Her Majesty the Queen and the newly born Prince were taken to the Sofia Palace, accompanied by His Majesty the King, and the professors Stöckel, Stamatov, and Schulze.In confirmation of the above said, we sign the present act together with the above-mentioned witnesses and professors.”

Il principe ereditario Simeone è stato battezzato nella fede ortodossa il 12 luglio nella cappella del palazzo dei Santi Pietro e Paolo con l'acqua del fiume Giordano. Oltre al re e alla regina, al battesimo dell'erede al trono hanno partecipato sua sorella, la principessa Maria Luisa, suo zio, il principe Kyrill e sua zia, la principessa Eudoxie. Per commemorare la nascita di Simeone, è stata concessa un'amnistia a 4.000 prigionieri, vecchie tasse, tasse e multe sono state annullate e il ministro dell'istruzione ha annunciato che i voti degli studenti sarebbero stati aumentati di un grado. La regina Giovanna ha ricordato: " Quando mio figlio ha iniziato con i suoi primi sforzi scolastici, ha sorriso e ha detto che non avrebbe mai avuto questa possibilità " .
